Nikon D5000 - review

While externally resembling its predecessor, it inherits many key aspects of the higher-end D90 including its 12.3 Megapixel CMOS sensor with Live View and HD movie recording in the 720p format. The D5000 also becomes the first Nikon DSLR to feature a fully-articulated screen. The upgrades don't stop there either with the D90's 11-point AF system and continuous shooting boosted to 4fps.

It shares the same body as the existing D3, but equips it with a 24.5 Megapixel FX sensor. The D3x shoots at 5fps, or 7fps in the DX format (at 10.5 Megapixels). The sensitivity runs from 100 to 1600 ISO with extended 50, 3200 and 6400 ISO. The D3x also features a 100% viewfinder, 51-point AF system and a 3in VGA screen with Live View, although there’s no anti-dust or movie mode.

The resolution has been increased to 12.3 Megapixels, continuous shooting to 4.5fps, the maximum sensitivity to 6400 ISO, and the screen enlarged to 3in with VGA resolution. Unsurprisingly the D90 offers Live View, but the big new feature, and a first for any DSLR are video recording capabilities including HD.

It boasts many of the flagship D3's features, but squeezes them into a smaller and lighter D300-sized body. So the D700 sports the D3's 12.1 Megapixel FX format CMOS sensor, 3in VGA monitor, 51 point AF system and Live View, but additionally features a popup flash and anti-dust features. The viewfinder may not deliver 100% coverage, but as a full-frame model it's still large, and continuous shooting remains a respectable 5fps - even with 14-bit RAW files. See our Nikon D700 review.

It shares the same 10.2 Megapixel sensor, the same screen, and virtually the same body. New to the D60 are a stop-motion recording mode, eye sensors which switch the screen off, Active D-Lighting, an anti-dust system and an optional kit lens with VR stabilisation. Like the D40x though, you'll still need AF-S lenses to autofocus.

There’s a new 51-point AF system, 14-bit A-D conversion and a scene recognition system, along with shutter speeds from 30 seconds to 1/8000 and sensitivity from 100 to 6400 ISO. With tough build and many of the D3’s features, the D300’s an affordable pro DSLR.

The D3 also boasts 9 fps continuous shooting, a new 51-point AF system, 14-bit A-D conversion, an HDMI port, and a high resolution 3in VGA screen with Live View capabilities.

Like its predecessor, there’s a 2.5in screen with easy to use menus and a basic 3-point AF system. It remains ideal for first-time DSLR buyers.
